The best crossovers are leaders in one or many of the performance, comfort, design and safety categories. The best crossovers for 2020 at various price ranges include the Cadillac XT6, Ford Explorer, Jeep Gladiator, Kia Telluride, and Mercedes-Benz GLB.
Made in the United States with all the bells and whistles, the beautiful 2020 Cadillac XT6 is a three-row crossover that boasts a cleanly-designed exterior and plush interior. The engine packs a punch with the 3.6L V6 system that generates 310hp paired with four-cylinder operation to produce a better fuel economy. The nine-speed automatic transmission is standard, and this crossover is available with select driving modes for different situations. An all-wheel-drive option is available, as is the Sport version that has better handling and sporty design touches. Numerous features are available including a Wi-Fi hotspot, rearview video camera mirror, hands-free tailgate, and integrated wireless phone charging. Also, the endless list of safety and standard systems is not limited to the automatic reverse braking and night-vision display.
The namesake Ford Explorer was redesigned for the 2020 model year but returns to its old-school roots with a rear-wheel-drive system. The styling is more athletic and boasts a cleanly cast interior with a roomy feel due to the three rows of seating. The engine is a turbocharged 2.3L four-cylinder system that generates 300 horsepower. The top-of-the-line Platinum edition upgrades the engine to a turbocharged 3L 365hp V6 for the ultimate balance in fuel efficiency and power. Also, there is a gas and electric hybrid option that marries well to the 3.3L V6 with an electric motor to output 318 hp. The 10-speed automatic is standard in all models with all-wheel-drive available for even the base engine. Also included are several accident safety features which can add to the large tablet-like display.
Featuring head-turning styling and vivid colors, the Hyundai Kona is as fun-to-drive as it is to look at. This high-value crossover SUV is an easy pick due to the 147hp four-cylinder or 175hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine which will provide peppy acceleration. While the interior is not as wildly styled as the exterior, it maintains a nice level of user-friendliness and charm. Passenger and cargo space are not as prevalent as larger full-sized SUV’s but that is to be expected with a crossover. Nevertheless, owners and passengers will still find the legroom and storage space enough for grocery runs and long road trips. The base model starts at a highly affordable $21,195 and is jam-packed with features. The fuel economy is tough to be at 32mpg average highway, which is due to the efficiency of the turbocharged engine.
New for 2020 is the Kia Telluride which offers three-rows and is mechanically-related to the Hyundai Palisade, also an excellent choice, but with a more rugged appearance. The front grille features a honeycomb design and the body has a muscular fender and wide nameplates on the liftgate and edge of the hood. The engine is a powerful 3.8L V6 that produces 291 hp and an exceptional eight-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel-drive is an added option that can be switched on for snowy roads. The sport mode provides more rear-wheel power on dry roads. This model also features a variety of driver-assist and convenience features including a large and vivid 10.25-inch color touchscreen. The available options, design, and interior third-row seating make this choice one of the most family-friendly.
The Mercedes-Benz GLB, which is also new for 2020, is a compact luxury crossover that is sized between the GLA and GLC trims. The design features short overhangs in the front and rear, as well as, a very prominent front grille. The GLB seats seven when the optional third-row seat is added, and the second row is adjustable. This model features a 2L four-cylinder 221 hp engine with eight-speed automatic transmission. The all-wheel-drive system is top-notch with a sport mode that transfers additional power to the rear axil. Also, there are numerous driver-assist safety systems and the vehicle can perform semi-autonomous highway driving when properly equipped. In addition to the high-quality of Mercedes, this function makes it one of the best for 2020 as the auto market moves more toward a more automated driving experience.
